Repotting · Stone planting · Preparing for the season

View March topics

The active bonsai season begins in March. In this workshop, we focus on the key tasks that prepare our trees for the coming growing season.

Repotting

Our main focus is repotting. Together, we inspect the root system, carry out any necessary root pruning and place the bonsai in fresh, high-quality substrate. Correct repotting supports the tree’s vitality and lays the groundwork for healthy growth throughout the season.

Rock planting

This special design technique brings tree and stone together in a natural composition. You will learn how to choose suitable stones, attach the roots securely to the stone, and plan for the long-term development of these designs.

Preparing for the new season

We also cover the essential preparations for the new season: checking tree health, initial styling work, spring fertilising strategies, and care measures that support new shoots and growth.

Deciduous trees · Conifers · Wiring and further styling

View June topics

In June, we focus on pruning during the growing season and developing our bonsai further. Together with Václav Stropek and Josef Rauscher, you will discuss the next steps for your tree and put the appropriate techniques into practice.

Deciduous trees: pruning for light penetration and thinning

For deciduous trees, we focus on pruning for light penetration and thinning dense canopies. You will learn how to reduce foliage selectively so that more light reaches the inner branches and buds. We discuss which leaves and shoots should be retained and which can be removed or cut back to support further development.

Conifers: reduction pruning and fine ramification

For conifers, we focus on managing new growth and developing a balanced branching structure. We discuss which shoots can be cut back and which should be left to grow for now. The approach depends on the species, the vigour of the tree and the stage of development of the shoots.

Wiring and further styling

We use wiring and guy wires to bring suitable branches into the desired position. You will learn how to choose the right wire for a branch, apply it correctly and shape the branches gently. We work on the arrangement of the branches and the continued development of your bonsai. We also discuss removing the wire at the right time.

The work carried out depends on the species, health and stage of development of each bonsai. We also discuss how to care for your bonsai afterwards.

Needle care · Thinning · Wiring

View September topics

In September, we focus on caring for conifers and further refining our bonsai. Together with Václav Stropek and Josef Rauscher, you will assess your tree’s summer growth and current design. Based on this assessment, we choose the appropriate work for its continued development.

Conifers: needle care and shoot selection

For pines, we focus on needle removal. You will learn which older needles can be removed and which should be retained to sustain the tree and support its continued development. We also assess the vigour of different parts of the tree and select suitable shoots for further branch development. For other conifers, we adapt the care and shoot selection to the species.

Deciduous trees: ramification and canopy development

For deciduous trees, we look at how the branching structure has developed and how the branches are distributed within the canopy. We discuss where selective thinning is appropriate and which shoots should be retained for further development. We take into account the tree’s condition and the maturity of this year’s growth. We plan more substantial pruning for a suitable time.

Wiring and branch positioning

We use wiring and guy wires to bring branches and twigs into the desired positions and refine the structure of the canopy. You will learn how to choose the right wire, apply it correctly and shape the branches gently. We work on branch lines, the arrangement of twigs and the open spaces within the canopy. We also discuss checking existing wire and removing it at the right time.

The work carried out depends on the species, health and stage of development of each bonsai. We also discuss how to care for your bonsai afterwards.
